Helping a Parent Move Home From Southwest Florida: Your Boots on the Ground in Fort Myers

You live far away. Your parent lives here. I can be the help in between.

More and more of my work in Fort Myers, Gateway and across Southwest Florida is helping seniors move back home to family, or into their next forever place. The call usually comes from an adult son or daughter who lives in another state. Mom or Dad is ready to move, or needs to, and the family is trying to manage a house sale, a lifetime of belongings and a big emotional change from a thousand miles away.

Most families don't have the time, the means or the resources to fly down for weeks at a time. That is where I come in. I've been in real estate for 22 years, I've helped more than 1,000 families move, and I've lived in Gateway for 20 years. This work is a labor of love for me.

Why This Work Is Personal to Me

I cared for my own elderly momma through dementia. I know the phone calls, the worry and the guilt of wanting to do more. I also saw firsthand how many people down here need help, and how many families are trying to do it all from far away.

So when a family calls me about a parent's move, I don't see a listing. I see someone's mom or dad, and a family that needs someone they can trust on the ground.

What "Boots on the Ground" Looks Like

When you live out of state, you need one local person who handles the details and keeps you informed. Here is how my team and I help.

  • A plan: a walkthrough with your parent (and you by phone or video), a clear timeline and a pricing strategy based on current local sales.

  • A home that's ready to sell: pre-listing prep and staging, with no upfront cost staging when you list with me.

  • Help with belongings: referrals to trusted local movers, downsizing help and estate sale companies.

  • A sale you can manage from afar: showings, offers, inspections and repairs handled locally, with regular updates to the whole family.

  • A smooth closing: a dedicated transaction coordinator and closings that can often be signed remotely.

  • Peace of mind: a caring advocate who treats your parent the way I'd want my own momma treated.

How to Start Planning a Parent's Move

  1. Talk about the goal first. Where does your parent want to live, and when? Near you, in a smaller home, or in a community with more support?

  2. Get the paperwork in order. Find out whose name is on the deed and whether a power of attorney is in place if your parent will need help signing. An attorney can advise on your family's situation.

  3. Learn what the home is worth today. A current market analysis tells you what your parent can expect to net, which shapes every decision after that.

  4. Sort belongings early. Decide what moves, what goes to family and what gets sold or donated. This is often the hardest part, emotionally and physically.

  5. Line up local help. One trusted person on the ground saves the family from coordinating a dozen vendors long distance.

Every one of these steps is laid out in order in my free Remote Family Move Guide, with checklists and worksheets you can print and share with your siblings. Get the free guide

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sell my parent's house in Florida if I live out of state?

You can sell a parent's Fort Myers home without moving down here for weeks. A local Realtor handles the prep, showings, offers, inspections and repairs, and keeps you updated by phone and email. Many Florida closings can be signed remotely, so the family often only needs to travel for the move itself.

Who can sign to sell my parent's home?

The owner on the deed signs, which is usually your parent. If your parent can't sign on their own, a valid power of attorney or other legal authority may allow a family member to sign. Every situation is different, so confirm with a Florida real estate attorney before you list the home.

How long does it take to sell a parent's home in Fort Myers?

It depends on the price, the condition and the current Southwest Florida market. A home that is prepared, staged and priced well from day one sells faster than one that sits. I'll give you a realistic timeline based on recent sales in your parent's community before you decide.

Does my parent's home need to be empty before we sell?

No. Many homes sell with furniture in place, and some sell better staged. Once your parent moves, we can bring in staging so the home shows well. When you list with me, staging comes at no upfront cost, which means one less expense for the family to cover early.

What happens to all of my parent's belongings?

Start by choosing what moves with your parent and what family members want to keep. The rest can be sold, donated or handled by an estate sale company. I can refer trusted local movers, downsizing help and estate sale companies in the Fort Myers area so you aren't searching from out of state.

Is there a free guide for helping a parent move?

Yes. The free Remote Family Move Guide is a 14-page plan for families moving a parent from Southwest Florida, with conversation starters, a timeline, checklists and worksheets. Get the free guide here.

Is there a local group for families helping seniors move in Southwest Florida?

Yes. I started SWFL Seniors & Family Moving Help, a free Nextdoor group for families helping a parent move, downsize or relocate closer to family. Anyone can ask questions there, and I'm glad to help families in Gateway, Fort Myers and across Southwest Florida.
